Vonnie Smith holds a B.F.A. in Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Smith is a self-proclaimed Afrofuturist whose creative practice is rooted in experimental film and video art, expanded documentary, curation, and zine making. His work engages with concepts of Blackness, identity and radical forms of self care. Smith launched the multidisciplinary creative agency Nay/Nann Conceptual Group in 2022 in honor of his great aunt, Annie “Naynann” Miller. He has created several short form experimental documentaries and music videos. His work has shown at the Heritage Film Festival in Baltimore, MD; Milwaukee Short Film Festival in Milwaukee, WI; Milwaukee Film Fest in Milwaukee, WI; Gallery 400 in Chicago, IL; Walkers Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee, WI; Smithsonian Museum African American Film Festival in Washington DC; Hayti Heritage Film Festival in Durham, NC; Power Plant Gallery in Durham, NC; Experimental Tuesdays in Milwaukee, WI; Luminal Theater in Brooklyn, NY; Artspace in Raleigh, NC; and Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville, NC. Smith has taught courses in documentary practice, video art, zine making and color theory.
