SMU student Meredith Burke featured artist at State Fair of Texas

SMU student Meredith Burke is a featured artist at the State Fair of Texas with her sculpting techniques.

First-year SMU student, Meredith Burke, will be a featured artist at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, Oct. 18, where she will be demonstrating her sculpting techniques to the public. She also was featured on Oct. 4.

Meredith BurkeThe State Fair of Texas offers more than 1,100 competition categories in the creative arts including photography, canning, art, sewing and cooking. These competitions provide professionals and amateurs of all ages a showcase for their creative skills.

Burke, who is pursuing a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Studio Art, won several creative arts awards at the 2014 Texas State Fair for her ceramics and art pieces, including being named Best of Show in the entire ceramics/hand painted china/pottery junior division.

In addition to her successes in the art world, Burke was recently named National Scout of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The Scout of the Year competition rewards Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who display standout citizenship, patriotism, and love of country. 

“Meredith, through her many accomplishments and exceptional character, rose above her peers in exemplifying the qualities of the rank and clearly distinguished herself as this year’s VFW Scout of the Year winner,” said Kevin C. Jones, assistant adjutant general of the VFW.

Today, Burke continues to excel at SMU as a Hunt Leadership Scholar and piccolo player in the SMU Mustang Band.
