ALLAS (SMU) – The Caswell Leadership Fellows program is seeking SMU student applicants for financial support and guidance in developing a leadership initiative that serves the Dallas community.

Caswell Leadership Fellows is a program designed to cultivate strong leadership skills and high ethical standards within students. Successful applicants in the past have targeted a socio-economical need within the Dallas community and developed a plan for change. The fellowship ensures that students are financially supported and mentored throughout their projects.

Four undergraduate SMU students are chosen annually through a competitive grant process to receive up to $2,500 each to develop an impactful leadership project or become engaged in focused study in one of five fields: educational leadership, non-profit leadership, faith-based leadership, sustainability leadership, and international and cross-cultural leadership. Fellows will apply the field’s principles to further their own innovative project.

In 2007, SMU established an endowment of student leadership development in special recognition of Dr. James E. Caswell, a beloved SMU administrator and educator. Caswell believed in developing leaders who were reflective, authentic and dedicated to improving their local communities. Above all else, he believed in the principle "leadership in service to others."

“The Caswell Fellowship is an incredible yearlong experience with so many opportunities for growth and mentorship,” said senior Kelly Zitka, a 2014 Caswell Fellow. “I am being supported not only with my project endeavors but also throughout my development as a leader.”

Applications will be accepted through February 15, 2015. In addition to the application students will need to identify a mentor qualified in their proposed area of exploration who will provide guidance throughout the fellowship year.
