Dallas (SMU) – The SMU Cox School of Business Executive MBA (EMBA) and  Professional MBA (PMBA) programs both moved to the #3 spots, respectively, in the newly released biennial Bloomberg Businessweek magazine business school rankings.

Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist UniversityThe SMU Cox EMBA now ranks #3 globally, up from #7 in 2011, and the SMU Cox Professional MBA (PMBA) program now ranks #3 in the U.S., also up from #7 in 2011.

SMU Cox’s EMBA program is also ranked at #1 in the survey of recent graduates, which contributes to about two-thirds of the EMBA ranking.

PMBA graduates gave high marks to their post-graduation career success, which helped to make the SMU Cox PMBA program the #1 ranked program in the country for post-MBA outcomes. The overall rankings are the result of Bloomberg Businessweek survey responses from more than 10,000 graduates of both the EMBA and PMBA programs at 138 schools.

"Our goal has always been to provide an exceptional educational experience that will yield a lifetime of rewards,” said Albert W. Niemi, Jr., dean of the Cox School of Business. “Our commitment to our students continues to focus on offering outstanding faculty, innovative programs, forward-thinking research centers and a wonderful global alumni network.  We are privileged to be located in one of the greatest business centers in the world, and we are pleased by Bloomberg Businessweek’s recognition of the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students.”

Results of the Bloomberg Businessweek EMBA rankings are based on survey responses from graduates and EMBA program directors.  Graduate responses account for 65 percent of each school's score, while directors’ responses count for 35 percent.  Graduates were asked to rate the business school from which they graduated on teaching quality, career services, curriculum and other aspects of their EMBA experience.  Directors were asked to rank the business schools with which they compete.

The PMBA rankings, according to Bloomberg Businessweek, are based on “separate measures of student satisfaction, academic quality, and post-graduation outcomes.”  To determine which programs rank highest in academic quality, the survey editors cite that six measures are equally weighted: “GMAT scores, average student work experience, the percentage of tenured teachers, the average class size in core business classes, the number of business electives available to part-timers, and the percentage of students who ultimately complete the program.”  According to Bloomberg Businessweek, “the student survey contributes 40 percent of the final ranking, with academic quality and post-MBA outcomes contributing 30 percent each.”
