José Bowen’s fast, three-century look
at musical disruption featured on TED.COM

In his presentation at TEDxSMU, SMU Meadows School of the Arts Dean Jose Bowen talks about the changing technology of music distribution and Beethoven the businessman.

DALLAS (SMU) –SMU's José Bowen’s provocative interpretation of “Beethoven as Businessman,” and the evolution of music from a shared experience, to a personal (and eventually pirated) experience, is a featured presentation on the widely viewed TED.com site.

Bowen, dean of Meadows School of the Arts and a music professor, gave his presentation (see below) at TEDxSMU in December 2011 outlining how new printing technology and an improved piano provided a platform for the first music industry and influenced a generation of composers. TEDxSMU is an independent, self-organized event, modeled on the annual TED (technology, entertainment and design) conference in Long Beach, Calif., that features fast-paced, entertaining presentations and performances based on the concept of “ideas worth spreading.”

TED.com is an internationally viewed site with a huge audience.  The posting of Bowen’s presentation is only the second time that a presentation from TEDxSMU has been featured on TED.com.  The first TEDxSMU presentation to be featured on TED.com was that of architect Joshua Prince Ramus in October 2009.
