SMU law professors say Casey Anthony verdict not a surprise

Jeff Bellin and Meghan Ryan, assistant professors in SMU's Dedman School of Law, said Tuesday they were not surprised that a Florida jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murdering her daughter in a trial that had garnered national attention for weeks.

Bellin, an expert in in the areas of evidence, criminal law and criminal procedure, told KLIF radio host Chris Krok that he had been following the trial and knew all along "it was a much closer case than the media was suggesting. . .  I was not surprised the jury came back with a not guilty verdict on the major counts."

In an interview with Heather Hays of Fox 4 News, Ryan — an expert on criminal law, and law and science — said, "Actually, I wasn't terribly surprised by the verdict. There were quite a few holes in the prosecution's case. They had difficulty showing exactly how Caylee died and when she died."
